In many areas of trade and industry, combustible gases, vapors or dusts are dealt with. Explosions can cost lives and lead to property damage. Often, however, it is not the immediate property damage that is the worst. Production downtimes and a loss of image can threaten the existence of small and medium-sized companies in particular.
To prevent explosions, it is necessary to create a holistic explosion protection concept. Starting with the possible replacement of hazardous substances via technical protective measures to organizational measures, the result is an interlocking, complex protection system. On the basis of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, every employer is obliged to carry out a risk analysis.
The relevant scope of tasks is specified in the Industrial Safety Ordinance (BetrSichV). Since October 3rd, 2002, an explosion protection document has to be drawn up before work is started on newly built facilities with potentially explosive areas. For existing facilities with potentially explosive areas, there was a transition period until December 31, 2005.
